Dear HPCS Parent,
I wanted you to know that four-year-old kindergarten teacher Cathy Self recently let us know that she would be stepping away from the classroom after this school year. Cathy has taught at HPCS for twenty-five years and has influenced the lives of hundreds of young people in her time here. Cathy will be greatly missed, but we look forward to what God has in store for her in this next phase of life and ministry.
I also wanted you to know that upon Cathy’s resignation, we conducted an analysis of how our K4 program fits within our strategic vision for the school. This seemed a good opportunity to take a fresh look at the program in light of the need of a new K4 teacher. After concluding this analysis, we found that it would be best for our school to focus on the elementary, middle, and high school grades and not pre-school. More and more families are starting children at three years of age for pre-school and then sticking with that school (HPCS does not offer K3) until they need to make a transition. Our K5 and 1st grades are healthy and enrollment has remained strong year in and year out, but we’ve struggled in recent years to hit our K4 enrollment targets because of this trend in pre-schooling. With this information in hand, we could opt to pursue a full-fledged pre-school program starting with K3, but we just don’t have the space to make it happen. In addition, we’re becoming increasingly concerned about the burdensome regulations pre-schools are facing from the state and would need to commit additional resources to meeting these obligations that come only with programs educating four-year-olds and younger.
So, we’ve concluded that this will be our last year of K4 at Hampton Park. I say this with a heavy heart, as we’ve loved our four-year-olds dearly! They are always such a fun bunch to be around! But we think this decision will allow us to focus even more energy and resources on the elementary grades, and we’re excited about some announcements we plan to make in the days ahead about the particulars of these enhancements.
Thank you again to Cathy for her twenty-five years of selfless service to our youngest students! Lord bless you,
